Ottawa Welcomes President Obama in First Foreign Trip as U.S. President

Canadian Tulip Festival Presents Tulip to American Embassy

Ottawa (Vocus) February 18, 2009

– U.S. President Barack Obama will make his first foreign visit as President on Thursday, February 19, spending the day in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city. Short videos of Ottawans welcoming the President and giving him advice on what he should see in Ottawa and know about Canadians have been posted at http://www.ottawatourism.ca (direct link is http://www.ottawatourism.ca/en/multimedia-a-images/video).

To celebrate the occasion, the local tourism industry has created several Obama-themed offerings, including:

The Obama BeaverTail, also known as an ObamaTail. A BeaverTailTM is a hot pastry treat born in Ottawa. It’s made of wholewheat dough stretched into the shape of the tail of one of Canada’s national symbols–the beaver–then float cooked in canola oil and served hot with a variety of delectable toppings. Usually Canadians choose from a topping of cinnamon and sugar, chocolate hazelnut, maple butter or apple cinnamon but on February 19, the ObamaTail will be served with cinnamon and sugar, then a whipped cream “O” topped with chocolate sauce and a splash of maple. They’re $ 3.75 each at the flagship store in the ByWard Market neighbourhood, or $ 4 each at kiosks along the Rideau Canal Skateway. ObamaTails were also served to 1000 guests of the Canadian Embassy in Washington during President Obama’s January inauguration. http://www.beavertails.ca
A five-foot tulip painted (see photo at right) with President Obama’s likeness by Ottawa artist Jill Alexander will be presented to the Embassy of the United States by the Canadian Tulip Festival. This annual event in Ottawa is the world’s largest tulip festival and runs May 1-18, 2009. Similar large painted tulips decorate the major festival sites. http://www.tulipfestival.ca
A non-alcoholic Obama Hawaiian Punch will be served to all guests at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Ottawa Airport on February 19. http://www.hieottawa.com
An Obama-themed menu will be offered on February 18 and 19 at Graffiti’s Italian Eatery at the Holiday Inn Select in Kanata (west Ottawa). The menu features the Senator Obama Chicago-Style Omelette, the Barack Burger, the Inaugural Dinner Washington-Style and the Obamatini! http://www.hisottawa.ca
And “Claudio the Soup Guy” at Muffins Plus in the World Exchange Plaza’s food court downtown continues to sell out of his President Obama Chili Soup. He’s been making it–and selling out–since President Obama’s election in November.

Ottawa is a city brimming with internationally renowned museums, cultural attractions, a thriving culinary scene and a four-season outdoor paradise for those who like to bike, kayak, canoe, jog, or skate! President Obama’s visit comes just before the final weekend of Winterlude, Canada’s winter celebration, which features skating on the frozen Rideau Canal, snow and ice sculptures, outdoor concerts, children’s snow playgrounds, and all types of outdoor activities. http://www.winterlude.gc.ca

U.S. Department of Justice Awards Safe Harbour $340,000 to Establish a Tri-County Transitional Housing Program for Victims of Domestic Violence

U.S. Department of Justice Awards Safe Harbour $ 340,000 to Establish a Tri-County Transitional Housing Program for Victims of Domestic Violence

Beachwood, OH (PRWEB) September 12, 2006

Safe Harbour Domestic Violence Shelter, Inc. has been awarded a Transitional Housing Assistance Grant by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women to establish Homeward Bound, a transitional housing project. This is the first time that these grant monies have been bestowed to any agency in the Firelands Area.

Grants made under this program support programs that provide assistance to individuals and their children who are in need of housing assistance as a result of fleeing a situation of domestic violence, and for whom emergency shelter services or other crisis intervention services are unavailable or insufficient.

Safe Harbour Domestic Violence Shelter, Inc. joined with the Volunteers of America of Northwest Ohio, Inc., Zonta Club of Sandusky Area, Ottawa County Transitional Housing, Inc., and the Sandusky Area YMCA to form Homeward Bound. Additionally, local landlords, churches, the OSU Extension Office, and other service providers are key elements to the overall project’s success.

The purpose of this partnership is to create comprehensive, wrap-around services for victims of domestic violence, who are homeless or at risk of being homeless, who reside in Erie, Ottawa, or Huron counties in the state of Ohio. Homeward Bound represents the commitment of agencies and community members in the three counties to work together to streamline efforts, search for effective alternatives, and leverage existing resources in order to create holistic, victim-centered services that assist victims of domestic violence obtain safe, secure, and permanent housing.

“Homeward Bound will make a tremendous difference for women and their children in our community by filling a current gap for those who victimized by domestic violence” said Linda Mitchell, Executive Director of Safe Harbour. “For more than five years, I have dreamed of establishing a transitional housing program and I am thrilled about the opportunity that the Office on Violence Against Women has provided us” she further stated. Safe Harbour called upon Lauren Litton of I.S.P. Consulting, based in Norwalk, Ohio to assist in locating and securing funding for the project, as she has worked nationally on violence against women and child abuse related issues.

Ms. Litton indicated that “this project is built upon the belief that with the necessary time, support and opportunities, families will be able to live violence free and break the cycle of poverty and domestic violence.” Safe Harbour will work with its partners to offer clients intensive case management services. It is anticipated that clients will locate and obtain the housing of their choice, receive necessary subsidies, and increase their self-sufficiency skills in order to maintain their housing once the subsidies have ended. As of September 1, 2006 the project will enter into its planning phase with the goal of being operational by the end of the year.

For more information about the transitional program or Safe Harbour’s services, contact Linda Mitchell at (419) 621-7785 or for information about community collaboration and violence against women and children contact Lauren Litton at (419) 660-8000.

Six HealthLine Systems? Clients Selected For 2011-12 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals Honor Roll

Six HealthLine Systems’ Clients Selected For 2011-12 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals Honor Roll

(PRWEB) July 25, 2011

A place on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll is reserved for medical centers that demonstrate unusually strong expertise across multiple specialties, scoring at or near the top in at least six of 16 specialties. U.S. News & World Report analyzed virtually every hospital/medical center in the United States in 16 specialties.

For 2011-12 only 140 of the 4,825 hospitals that were evaluated performed well enough to rank in even one specialty. And of those 140, just 17 qualified for a spot on the Honor Roll by ranking at or near the top in six or more specialties. Six of these seventeen — or 35% — of these premiere Honor Roll organizations use one or more software solutions developed by HealthLine Systems (HLS).

HealthLine Systems’ CEO Dan Littrell commented: “We are proud of our clients included in the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. HealthLine Systems’ software solutions help clients improve access to care, move toward paperless provider credentialing, and document improvements in quality.”
