AtlantiCare Selects Third Brigade Host Intrusion Prevention System to Further Enhance Security of Data, Applications and Systems

Ottawa, ON, and Reston, VA (PRWEB) March 22, 2007

Third Brigade , a security software company that specializes in host intrusion prevention systems, today announced the selection of its software by AtlantiCare , a regional, not-for-profit healthcare organization based in southeastern New Jersey with more than 4,400 employees and 60 locations.

Healthcare organizations rely heavily on critical e-health and enterprise systems that are increasingly accessible via the Internet. As a result, it’s become more challenging and important to protect the availability and integrity of these systems, and the confidentially of sensitive patient and medical data. Host intrusion prevention is a security best-practice and complements the company’s defense-in-depth strategy.

“We recognize the importance of staying ahead of the latest threats, and implementing security best practices to protect our critical e-health systems, and to ensure patient safety and confidentiality.” said Daniel Morreale, CIO of AtlantiCare. “Third Brigade’s host intrusion prevention system reduces vulnerabilities by shielding us from known and zero-hour threats. And by acting as a virtual patch, it shields hard-to-patch and unpatchable systems, and allows us to test and deploy vendor-supplied patches more thoroughly and efficiently.”

Third Brigade Deep Security brings proven network security approaches, including firewall and intrusion detection and prevention, down to individual computers and devices. It shields vulnerabilities in Windows, Linux and Unix operating systems, as well as enterprise and web applications common to healthcare providers.

“Third Brigade helps AtlantiCare comply with tough industry regulations such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Sarbanes-Oxley, and Gramm-Leach Bliley Act (GLBA),” said Wael Mohamed, President and CEO of Third Brigade. “Healthcare leaders like AtlantiCare are being proactive in ensuring their EHR and other medical and administrative systems are properly secured from cyber attacks.”

Third Brigade Announces Its Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) Now Supports Sun Solaris

Third Brigade Announces Its Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) Now Supports Sun Solaris

Ottawa, ON and Reston, VA (PRWEB) November 29, 2005

Third Brigade, Inc. (http://www.thirdbrigade.com) today announced that its intrusion prevention system supports the Solaris ™ 8, Solaris ™ 9 and the Solaris™ 10 Operating Systems (OS). Third Brigade Deep Security 3, which began shipping in July, allows Sun Microsystems’ customers in government, healthcare, financial services, telecommunications, higher education and other sectors to maintain control over IT assets that are threatened by growing security risks. Intrusion prevention provides a last line of defense against a broad range of network attacks, helps ensure compliance with SOX, HIPAA, FISMA, CISP and other regulations, and maintain business continuity.

“Targeted attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in both custom-built and COTS applications are becoming more prevalent, sophisticated and difficult to defend against,” said Wael Mohamed, President and CEO of Third Brigade. “We are excited to provide the Solaris community with an advanced, proactive, host-based intrusion prevention system that allows enterprises to maintain control of their systems,” he added.

Third Brigade Deep Security (http://www.thirdbrigade.com/products/index.html) comprises two main components: Deep Security Manager and Deep Security Agent. The Manager is a role-based, central management platform that allows administrators to create and enforce security policies across Solaris, Linux, Windows, and other types of hosts in large IT environments, with little management overhead. The Agent, which now runs on the Solaris 8, Solaris 9 and the Solaris 10 OS, is a small-footprint software component that combines a high-performance stateful firewall, and deep packet inspection. The stateful firewall reduces the attack surface of hosts by controlling network access to intended services. Deep packet inspection shields vulnerabilities from being exploited by filtering out known and unknown attacks and protocol anomalies.

“With Solaris 10 we’ve added advanced security features such as process rights management previously found only in our military grade trusted Solaris product and new features such as Secure Execution and Solaris Containers,” said Tom Goguen, VP Software Product Marketing, Sun Microsystems, Inc. “We welcome support for Third Brigade’s intrusion prevention system on the most secure operating system we’ve ever released.”

Third Brigade?s Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System Deployed in Industry Canada Security Studies

Third Brigade’s Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System Deployed in Industry Canada Security Studies

Ottawa, ON (PRWEB) October 11, 2006 -–

Third Brigade (http://www.thirdbrigade.com), a security software company that specializes in intrusion prevention systems (IPS), today announced Industry Canada is using its host-based intrusion prevention system in its Protocol Analysis Lab (PAL).

Based in Ottawa, one area of interest of the PAL is the protection of traditional telecommunications as well as Next Generation Networks (NGN). Among its responsibilities is to provide analysis of existing and emerging security threats to these networks, and to be a conduit of collaborative initiatives between government, academia and the telecommunications industry in order to quantify and help resolve these threats.

Third Brigade’s host-based intrusion prevention system is one of the technologies being used by PAL, in its on-going engineering studies into VoIP and NGN security vulnerabilities. Third Brigade’s deep packet inspection engine inspects inbound and outbound traffic streams for malicious code and protocol anomalies that match defined rules.

“Canada is a leader and innovator in telecommunications and security technologies,” said Michael Binder, Assistant Deputy Minister of Industry Canada. “As VoIP is rapidly being adopted by a wide range of users – from government to small business to the home consumer – it is increasingly important that we work to ensure the stability of these networks. Our collaboration with Third Brigade is an excellent example of how federal government labs are working with Canadian technology firms to promote the safe and secure use of new technologies.”

Because VoIP offers a broad range of compelling benefits – including simplified infrastructure, increased scalability, reduced operating costs, improved productivity, and flexibility – it is becoming a strategic focus for governments and businesses alike.

However, like all IP-based applications, it is vulnerable to attacks that can result in service disruptions and theft. By architecting advanced, host-based intrusion prevention technology into their systems, VoIP providers are addressing a key customer concern, and will help ensure the rapid adoption of their products and services.

“Industry Canada is involved in stimulating the study of VoIP security between Government, industry and academia partners ,” said Brian O’Higgins, CTO of Third Brigade. “Third Brigade is on the leading edge of protecting hosts from new and emerging threats. The valuable insights we’re gaining from their studies will help further ensure we’re able to provide the most advanced, practical security solutions for today’s telecommunications systems, and tomorrows.”

About Industry Canada

Industry Canada is committed to fostering a growing competitive, knowledge-based Canadian economy. The department works with Canadians throughout the economy and in all parts of the country to improve conditions for investment, improve Canada’s innovation performance, increase Canada’s share of global trade and build a fair, efficient and competitive marketplace.

About Third Brigade

Third Brigade specializes in providing intrusion prevention systems (IPS) to health care, government, telecommunications, financial services and other organizations that need to prevent attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in commercial and custom software, including web applications. Third Brigade to Deliver Two Presentations at the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s 2006 Blue Health IT Symposium

Third Brigade to Deliver Two Presentations at the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s 2006 Blue Health IT Symposium

Ottawa, Ontario; Reston, VA (PRWEB) November 13, 2006

Third Brigade, Inc. (http://www.thirdbrigade.com), a security software company that specializes in host-based intrusion defense systems, today announced that Brian O’Higgins, Chief Technology Officer, and Blake Sutherland, Vice President of Product Management and Co-Chair of the Vulnerability Assessment Working Group of the eHealth Vulnerability Reporting Program (EHVRP) will present at the 2006 Blue Health IT Symposium.

Mr. O’Higgins’ presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at 1:15pm CT at the Peabody Memphis Hotel, Memphis, TN, and is entitled, “Being Proactive for Zero-Day Threats, Using Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) to Protect Critical Applications.”

This session will provide an overview of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) vs. Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), and outline some widely divergent approaches to IPS. A prominent Arizona health insurer selected a host-based IPS (HIPS) approach to shield critical applications to buy time to deploy patches on a sensible maintenance schedule, rather than an emergency mode reactive schedule. The requirements were to monitor and alert on threats as they occur, but also to automatically protect systems that contain critical data or sensitive information. A case study of the insurer’s deployment experience from testing to operations will be outlined.

Mr. Sutherland’s presentation is scheduled for Thursday, November 16 at 1:30pm CT at the Peabody Memphis Hotel, Memphis, TN, and is entitled, “eHealth Vulnerability Reporting Program (EHVRP) Update: Practical Approaches to Addressing Vulnerabilities in eHealth Systems”.

The eHealth Vulnerability Reporting Program (EHVRP) is an industry initiative that has been formed to ensure customers of eHealth systems have the necessary information to appropriately manage risk related to eHealth systems. The program hopes to do this by establishing a mechanism for eHealth system vendors and their customers to access and report system vulnerabilities in a mutually acceptable, beneficial and confidential manner. The initial focus of this program is on Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems. As part of this program, demonstration projects are being used to validate that vulnerability information used in conjunction with appropriate compensating controls are a practical way of quickly reducing risk while maintaining system usability

The focus of the presentation will be on the findings to date with respect to the level of vulnerabilities being found in EHR systems and the practical approaches being used to effectively secure these systems while maintaining usability and without introducing significant new costs of ownership.

Third Brigade will also exhibit at the conference at Booth #49.

Dates and Times:

Wednesday, November 15    3:45pm – 7:00pm CT

Thursday, November 16    11:30am – 1:30pm CT

Third Brigade, Provider of Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), Adds Security and Healthcare Experts to Advisory Board

Ottawa, Ontario; Reston, Virginia (PRWEB) July 6, 2006

Third Brigade, Inc. (http://www.thirdbrigade.com), a provider of intrusion prevention systems (IPS), today announced the addition of Ira Winkler and Dr. Robert Mandel to its Advisory Board.

Ira Winkler, CISSP, is President of the Internet Security Advisors Group. Mr. Winkler is recognized as one of the world’s experts in Internet security, information warfare, information-related crime investigation, and industrial espionage, and has been named a “Modern Day James Bond” by the media. He is a specialist in penetration testing, where he infiltrates companies, both technically and physically, to find and repair an organization’s weaknesses. He began his career at the National Security Agency (NSA), where he served as an Intelligence and Computer Systems Analyst. He moved on to support other US and overseas government military and intelligence agencies. After leaving government service, he served as President of the Internet Security Advisors Group and Director of Technology of the National Computer Security Association, and Chief Security Strategist for Hewlett-Packard Consulting. He has authored Corporate Espionage, which has been described as the bible of the Information Security field, and the bestselling Through the Eyes of the Enemy.

“Hackers increasingly exploit vulnerabilities in commercial and custom software applications to gain access to critical systems and data,” said Ira Winkler, President of the Internet Security Advisors Group. “Host-based intrusion prevention systems that use proven, practical approaches are central to a defense-in-depth strategy, and help protect organizations from malicious attacks. I look forward to working closely with Third Brigade as they help businesses and governments address the growing security threats.”

Dr. Robert Mandel, MD, MBA and Vice President of Healthcare Services, recently returned to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) from the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC), where he served as COO for a year.
