Feeding Growing Global Population Will Require Science & Technology

Feeding Growing Global Population Will Require Science & Technology

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Vocus/PRWEB) March 02, 2011

Feeding a growing population with more and better food is a unique challenge, but collaborative innovation creates sustaining solutions, DuPont Nutrition & Health President Craig F. Binetti said at the 2011 Gulfood Exhibition and Conference.

“From farm to fork, DuPont has the opportunity to use science and technology to increase agricultural productivity, improve food quality and achieve long-term food security,” Binetti said.

The world’s population will reach 7 billion this year – increasing by 150,000 people per day for the next 40 years. This means the world will need to increase production of high nutritional value foods by 70 percent in that same period to meet the needs of its people.

“To increase nourishment for all requires solutions that are local. What works in Brazil may not work in Dubai,” Binetti said. “Increasing food production and providing more and better foods locally will be imperative to helping address the world’s food challenges.”

Binetti was joined by Eser Acarkan, DuPont food industry leader for Turkey, Middle East and Africa and Heike van de Kerkhof, global director for DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

“DuPont is uniquely positioned to increase global food production across the value chain. The Middle East is a key developing market with increasing emphasis on the food industry,” Acarkan said.

DuPont looks at various levels of food production and provides solutions to address issues that might arise at stages within the process. For example, Pioneer Hi-Bred is a DuPont business that gives farmers the ability to increase their output through advance plant genetics. Pioneer® brand seeds are sold to farmers in more than 90 countries around the world. Pioneer uses a sophisticated toolkit to create greater yield, benefits to consumers and environmental sustainability. Among other things, Pioneer is developing seeds with drought tolerance, nitrogen use efficiency and new forms of insect and disease resistance. Pioneer’s products include Plenish™ high oleic soybeans – oil derived from these Pioneer® brand soybeans has an enhanced oil profile and increased oil stability for the food industry, with 0g trans fat and 20 percent less saturated fat than commodity soybean oil.

Another example of the company’s efforts to improve agricultural productivity can be found in the DuPont Crop Protection business, which provides herbicides, insecticides and fungicides that can help crop growers protect their crops. This includes a variety of science-powered innovations that can increase output and limit the impact that environmental factors might otherwise have on food production.

The DuPont joint venture, Solae, develops innovative soy-based technologies and ingredients for food, meat and nutritional products, creating healthy and more nutritious food options.

Food security is a growing concern, and DuPont Qualicon provides safety diagnostic technology that can detect the presence of pathogens and other unwanted organisms for food. In addition, DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers uses science and continuous innovation to protect and preserve foods, this business works with food manufacturers and retailers, improving packaging to protect foods from pathogens, lock in vital nutrients and keep food fresher longer so it can be transported with a minimum of spoilage and waste.

“Our partners in this endeavor are collaborating with us every day to develop science that creates new opportunities to improve the quantity, quality, accessibility and security of the food we eat,” Binetti said. “We all need to play a part in changing the future and utilize our collective ingenuity to deliver sufficient, healthy food for everyone.”

DuPont (http://www.dupont.com) is a science-based products and services company. Founded in 1802, DuPont puts science to work by creating sustainable solutions essential to a better, safer, healthier life for people everywhere. Operating in more than 90 countries, DuPont offers a wide range of innovative products and services for markets including agriculture and food; building and construction; communications; and transportation.

NSF International?s Global Food Safety Certification Division Earns Five-Star Rating from British Retail Consortium (BRC)

NSF International’s Global Food Safety Certification Division Earns Five-Star Rating from British Retail Consortium (BRC)

NSF International

Ann Arbor, Mich. (PRWEB) August 09, 2011

NSF International’s Food Safety Division has earned the highest rating from the British Retail Consortium (BRC), developer of the BRC global food safety standards for food, packaging, storage and distribution. This excellent five-star rating confirms NSF’s reputation as a leading certifier to the global food safety standards, having certified more than 28,000 farms and facilities.

NSF is committed to helping companies throughout the global food supply chain strengthen their quality assurance programs. In 2009, NSF International became the first North American certification body to earn ANSI accreditation for BRC standards and has become the largest certifier to BRC worldwide and SQF in the U.S. Many of the leading global retail and foodservice companies now require certification of their suppliers against these Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)*-benchmarked standards to help strengthen food safety practices.

For the first time, BRC published the key performance indicators (KPI) ratings of each certification body from January – June 2011 in their directory, which highlights NSF International’s five-star rating. The BRC measures each certification body on the following KPIs every six months: Audit Report Writing Quality, Compliance to the BRC Scheme & Standard Protocol Requirements, Auditor Registration, Data Submission, Commitment and Communication.

“BRC works closely with our certification bodies to ensure the most effective and consistent use of the BRC Global Standards,” said John Kukoly, Senior Technical Marketing Representative in North America for BRC. “A rigorous set of key performance indicators are used to measure feedback and continually improve the performance of our partners in assessing certified companies. These measures, the most rigorous in the industry, ensure that those certification bodies (able to perform BRC certification audits) are held to exacting expectations and standards themselves. When a certification body receives a five-star rating, such as NSF International, this puts them at the very top performance level within the BRC program.”

“NSF International has grown into the largest certifier to BRC worldwide, and SQF in the U.S., because we’ve continued to focus on quality and meeting the expectations of our customers, accreditation bodies and standard’s owners,” said Robert Prevendar, Director of Food Safety Certification Systems for NSF International. “I am very proud of our auditors and operations team for placing us in the top five percent with our score of 100, which helps us fulfill NSF’s mission of protecting and improving human health worldwide.”

N2N Global Launches Web Page Giving Parents a Helping Hand on Food Safety

N2N Global Launches Web Page Giving Parents a Helping Hand on Food Safety

Angela Paymard, Chairwoman, N2N Global

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) August 11, 2011

“There are few things more important than the health of your child,” said N2N Global Chairwoman Angela Paymard. That’s why N2N Global is pleased to announce a new web page designed with parents in mind called: Kids Lunch, Quality and Food Safety.

“This page gives parents everywhere a helping hand when it comes to making sure the food they feed their kids is safe and healthy,” says Angela Paymard, Chairwoman of the Orlando based, N2N Global. Paymard’s Florida based company provides operations compliance, and food safety solutions for food companies which helps ensure the world’s food supply operates in an efficient and effective manner, resulting in a higher quality of food in the supply chain. Paymard works with restaurants, retailers, distributers, packers and processors around the world.

“This web page is particularly important in light of a new study from the Department of Nutrition at the University of Texas at Austin. Researchers found that the food parents packed in their children’s lunches were found to be kept at unsafe temperatures with 90% of the students,” Paymard says.

The study examined more than 700 lunches of children ages three to five. Those lunches contained at least one perishable item. Researchers measured the temperatures of those items every 1 hour to 1.5 hours before those foods were to be eaten. Guess what? Less than ten percent of the perishable items they looked at were found to be in the safe temperature zone.

In one example lunch meat (which needs to be stored at 40 F or less) was left out above the safe temperature for more than 2 hours. It’s only safe for up to two hours.

N2N Global’s new web page provides parents with information as to how they can keep food in their house fresh and safe for their families. The page provides meaningful and useful facts about how to pack lunches, and tools to keep foods well preserved while your children are doing what they are in school for: learning. N2N provides you with knowledge about lunchboxes, coolers, and ice packs that will keep your child’s lunch safe.

“My hope is that these ideas will give all moms and parents some “easy-to-do” tips so they don’t worry about lunch. Then kids can have better tasting food, fresher food to eat. What is even better, when parents follow our page, they hopefully will be less likely to get the call from the school nurse saying their child has a stomach-ache.” Paymard adds.

N2N Global’s product suite brings powerful solutions for all members of the food supply chain. For Supply Side companies, N2N Global offers agri-ERP solutions, farm management, food safety, business analytics and traceability software. For direct to consumer and buy side companies,

N2N Global offers food safety, compliance, and supply chain management tools to help ensure the food supply is properly managed for minimized risk. N2N Global provides comprehensive solutions for companies looking for ways to improve efficiencies, enhance profitability, and ensure compliance & food safety.
